Moderna Stock Analysis
After Pfizer $PFE , Moderna $MRNA develops a vaccine. The Moderna Vaccine has several advantages compared to the Pfizer vaccine:
1. The Moderna Vaccine is 94.5% effective compared to 90% for the Pfizer vaccine
2. While the Pfizer Vaccine has to be stored in very cold temperatures, the Moderna Vaccine can be stored in a normal freezer for up to 6 months, for 30 days in a fridge and 12 hours at room temperature.
But the Moderna Vaccine is more expensive, costing about $32-37 per dose, compared to $19.50 for the Pfizer vaccine.
So far, Moderna got about 200 million preorders including 100 million from the US Government. Moderna is expecting to sell 500 million to 1 billion doses in 2021.
Moderna currently has 23 vaccines in their pipeline but only this one can be commercialized. They are working on vaccines for Zika virus, influenza and even cancer.
Moderna Vaccines all uses mRNA technology. mRNA Vaccines are more effective, more adaptable and has less side effects than conventional vaccines and Moderna is the leader in mRNA vaccines.
However, Moderna did not sell any products yet. They had only $60 million in revenues last year coming from grants and collaborations.
Is a $36 billion valuation justified? In the bull case, Moderna can have $35 billion in revenues last year. But we need to understand that after this pandemic is over, the revenues will fall too. They don't have other products yet and the competition is rising in mRNA vaccines.
